JA107 is a special issue on details. Through introducing the details in 37 recent projects by Japanese architects, we examine the spatiality of architecture that comes to emerge.
The works are presented solely through three factors: the architect's own words describing how the intentions towards the architecture are instilled in the details (text), the drawings that physically construct them (detail drawing), and the realized spaces (photo). The works are perhaps difficult to understand without plans and cross-sections, and the brilliance of the architecture cannot entirely be conveyed through one or two details. Nevertheless, if details are indeed where the essence for creating the space and the architect's stance itself emerge, then detail drawings carry not merely information but also the very idea of architecture itself.
In this issue we attempt to understand the essence of architecture through detail drawings in which the traces of the architect's hands remain. At the same time it is also an endeavor to reconsider the meaning of details.
